Lock Haven University – Thomas Fieldhouse, Lock Haven, PA
The Quality of Sound
When you walk into the Thomas Fieldhouse, a few things come to your attention. Immediately you’ll notice the space isn’t new. Originally built in 1935, rebuilt in 1953, and renovated in 1984, the Fieldhouse has undoubtedly seen better days. Next you’ll notice the heritage of the space. Murals and pictures of famed Lock Haven wrestlers line the wall on the side of the practice gym. Banners display the success of previous wrestling, volleyball, and basketball teams, all which practice and compete within the Fieldhouse. Lastly, you’ll see 18 black boxes strategically suspended from various parts of the gymnasium.
“Are those the speakers?” asked many onlookers as we installed them. In short, yes. However, to understand the design and purpose of the system, you have to dive a little deeper than that. The audio system is comprised of 15 Danley Sound Labs OS80 loudspeakers. No ladies and gentlemen that is not a typo, there are really 15 of those speakers permanently installed. Separated into 5 zones (one for each seating plane and the two courts), the OS80’s provide highs and mids throughout the entire space, while providing the flexibility of a yoke mounted speaker. Lows, on the other hand, are bellowed out by 3 Danley TH118 subwoofers, all of which are zoned individually.
Due to the magnitude of the system, 2 Danley DNA-10K4 Pro amplifiers are needed for power. Behringer’s X32 Rack Mount variation provides control. But, the fun part is wireless control has been implemented into the system!
It is safe to say, the Thomas Fieldhouse has never heard a better day than today.
